OUR History

The Marist project emerged following the French Revolution: this was a time of turmoil and uncertainty, including a division between the Church and French Society. There was a movement to restore the position of power of the Church, while others, including the Marists sought a new way forward. They recognised that the people of their time needed to hear the Gospel from a more humble, discreet and modest Church, one modelled on the Mother of Jesus.

They promised to begin a new religious order in the Church; a group called “Mary-ists” and pledged their lives to the service of others in the spirit of Mary.
