The Marist Cultural and Spiritual Centre (CCSM) in Toulon, France, recently celebrated its tenth anniversary.
Jean-Yves Simon, the Centre’s first president, recalls its 2016 founding as a time of excitement, openness, and innovation, with early initiatives in ecclesial sociology, ecology, psychology, interfaith dialogue, and personal development. This period also saw the creation of the Centre’s colourful logo and slogan: “Awaken, Question, Discover.” Fr Olivier Laurent, supported by a team of lay people, established a voluntary organisation to help the Centre thrive in Toulon.
The Centre’s journey has not been without challenges. Fr Paul Walsh took over as president during the Covid pandemic, facing significant financial difficulties. The Board has since worked to secure the Centre’s long-term future. In 2024, constructive dialogue and renewed hope led to a restructuring of roles, the formation of a new Board, a strengthened team of facilitators, and improved communications. Public interest has grown steadily, and the Centre has found its rhythm.
The original vision of fostering collaboration between religious and lay people has proven successful. Today, the CCSM offers workshops, conferences, and artistic events, making it a dynamic and open venue run by around fifty volunteers. The Christian community and the four Marist fathers present have also transformed the adjoining chapel into a welcoming place of worship.
The theme for the upcoming season, “Weaving Connections,” reflects the Centre’s ongoing mission. Fr Jimmy McElroy, the Provincial’s representative, attended the anniversary event and remarked, “These activities are truly Marist!”
