In 1899, the Marists settled in Meppen, a town in north-western Germany. They founded a school to educate boys from the surrounding villages, many of whom became missionaries in Oceania. Today, a community of retired Marists live attached to the old building which houses the diocesan run school, Gymnasium Marianum.
