As Christianity celebrated the Epiphany of Christ, Marist Father Justin Taylor passed away in New Zealand. Though not a complete surprise due to his serious illness, his passing comes as a huge loss to many and for many reasons.

Justin’s life was mainly of research and teaching: Marist scholasticate, the École biblique in Jerusalem, the Theological College in Auckland. As a young priest he met professor J.R.R. Tolkien, author of ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Justin asked him whether his name has German roots. Tolkien answered ‘yes – and you are the first to notice!’ (tollkühn-daring). Justin was blessed with an incredible memory which helped him to see connections others could not see.

In his Marist bibliography we find titles for three aspects of his work: Marist spirituality and its roots in the Bible (Acts of the Apostles) – the history of the Society of Mary (mainly his Colin-biography) – the contemplative dimension of Marist spirituality. He lived the unity of his vocation, professionalism, and prayer and liturgical life, in a humble manner.

To us Marists, he is mainly known for the biography of our founder and as presenter of the Marist spirit in many provinces. To others, he is known as an eminent scholar on the history of the New Testament.

How do we honour Justin? Re-read something of his works… Unite also life and work and prayer… Love Scripture, love the spirit of Mary, and be faithful to all this even in time of illness.

Epiphany: I imagine Justin as a happy man now that so much will be revealed to him in life eternal which he tried to understand while with us. Justin, let me thank you for your friendship and support and for what you have done to inspire my Marist life.
