Voordat ik in Spanje aankwam, had ik me ook zonneschijn voorgesteld als de norm. Ik kwam begin maart aan in Sahag\u00fan en werd begroet door een lichte sneeuwbui. Vergeleken met de winters in Nieuw-Zeeland vond ik het echter niet zo erg, omdat de wind niet zo’n grote rol speelde. Wandelingen in de vroege ochtend waren een goede manier om te acclimatiseren. Vanaf het begin was mijn gemeenschap hier in de Albergue van Santa Cruz ongelooflijk gastvrij, ook al is mijn Spaans behoorlijk roestig. De eerste maand was rustig en gaf me de kans om me in te werken en het dagelijkse ritme van de Albergue te leren. Als we niet vol zitten, is er meer ruimte om tijd door te brengen met de pelgrims, en in die eerste weken had ik het voorrecht om veel diep ontroerende verhalen te horen over het leven, het geloof en de reizen die mensen naar de Camino brachten. <\/p>\n\n

Tegen de \"Semana Santa\" (Heilige Week) kwam de stroom pelgrims op gang. Mei en juni brachten bijna elke avond volle kamers, en daarmee de drukte en energie van een huis dat leeft met reizigers. We zijn gezegend met veel vrijwilligers en gastheren van over de hele wereld, die elk hun eigen cultuur en ervaringen meebrengen om ons gezamenlijke werk te verrijken. Toen juli en augustus aanbraken, liepen de aantallen terug met de zomerhitte - zoals altijd - maar we weten dat de route zich in september weer zal vullen. <\/p>\n\n

Als ik terugkijk op deze eerste zes maanden, zie ik een bediening die zowel repetitief als eindeloos gevarieerd is. De taken zijn misschien hetzelfde, maar elke dag is nieuw omdat elke pelgrim nieuw is. Ons pelgrimscaf\u00e9, het gezamenlijke diner en de dagelijkse mis markeren onze Albergue als een plek waar de Kerk aanwezig is op de Camino en waar we proberen Maria’s zachte aanwezigheid te delen met de vermoeiden. Hier vertrouwen we, net als Maria, op Gods voorzienigheid - in de overtuiging dat Hij rustig door ons heen werkt voor het welzijn van zowel pelgrims als gastheren. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
