Ik heb die twee dagen als zeer diepgaand ervaren, vooral de verering van het stoffelijk overschot van Franciscus. Ik heb Franciscus altijd beschouwd als een man die een enorme bijdrage heeft geleverd op vele gebieden, van cultuur tot beeldende kunst, van ecologie tot Italiaanse literatuur. Maar deze keer ben ik niet gestopt bij \"die\" Franciscus. Terwijl ik in de rij stond met vele andere pelgrims om zijn stoffelijk overschot te zien, dacht ik na over zijn leven en zijn radicale keuze, die heel anders was dan die van de meesten die hem vandaag de dag vereren, waarderen en liefhebben, waaronder ikzelf. Zijn bestaan was zo sober en vreugdevol, maar toch rijk aan Geest en relaties, dat het vaak onbereikbaar en onge\u00ebvenaard lijkt.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Terwijl ik enkele ogenblikken staarde naar die arme beenderen die iedereen nu kan vereren, voelde ik een sterke aantrekkingskracht in mij tot deze kleine maar grote man die de Kerk vernieuwde en vertrouwen en hoop gaf aan de armsten en meest ongelukkigen. Ik herontdekte hoe dringend het is om Jezus en het Evangelie weer centraal te stellen, om een relatie met Hem te cultiveren voor een leven van geloof, om Hem te kennen door Zijn Woord, om een weerspiegeling te zijn van Zijn voortdurende aanwezigheid in de geschiedenis, om in staat te zijn om in elkaar en in de schepping de werking van de Geest te herkennen die altijd leidt tot het behoud van broederlijke en universele gemeenschap. Het was voor mij een belangrijke en diepgaande ervaring, die nog vreugdevoller werd door de andere uitzonderlijke metgezellen die ik in Assisi ontmoette: Chiara, de lieve en sterke metgezel van Franciscus, en Carlo Acutis, de jonge man die verliefd is op de Eucharistie.
